RIS para Mejorar la Conectividad Inalámbrica en Bogotá
Moreno Reinel, Jahir Leonardo; Ferro Escobar, Roberto
Electromagnetic waves used in mobile services and next-generation networks face significant propagation constraints in urban environments due to high attenuation and limited building penetration. In cities, these limitations are compounded by sparse, antenna density, spectrum congestion, and geographic factors, leading to areas of poor connectivity and deepening the digital divide. This study examines connectivity quality in Bogotá by analyzing data sources such as user-reported reception and proposes the use of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) to create intelligent radio environments, drawing on the predominant literature on this technology. RIS are programmable metasurfaces capable of manipulating electromagnetic waves to increase information capacity and optimize the wireless channel. We outline potential deployment scenarios and the challenges relative to traditional designs currently implemented in the capital.

Diseño de un Sistema C-UAS para la neutralización de UAS No identificados. Caso de estudio Aeropuerto El Dorado, Bogotá, Colombia
Peña Herrera, Thomas Felipe; Ferro Escobar, Roberto
The growing threat of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), commonly known as drones, to airport security and operations is a significant challenge in Colombia. UAS flights near airports require the adoption of robust defense solutions to prevent collisions, disruption of air operations, and the risk of unauthorized surveillance. To address this problem, a Counter Unmanned Aircraft System (CUAS) was designed for El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, focusing on neutralizing hostile drones through jamming. The HTZ Warfare software was used, employing high-precision inputs such as digital terrain models (DTMs), building footprints (BGLs), clutter layers, and ITU-R P.452-18 propagation models. Through simulation of the coverage of 13 strategically placed jammers, an effective neutralization area was determined within the airport environment. The direction-finding (DF) detection system was described theoretically, although not implemented in the practical phase. Validation by a telecommunications expert highlighted a 98% reliability of the design, blocking 2.4 GHz control signals from 2 to 120 m in altitude throughout the airport area, subject to field conditions and operational feasibility. Furthermore, a survey revealed a favorable perception of the implementation of these systems in civil airports. It is concluded that the integration of high-precision simulation tools allows for the evaluation of viable and effective solutions for mitigating UAS threats in critical infrastructure.

OAI-SDR: Framework Inteligente de Búsqueda y Descubrimiento para Repositorios OAI-PMH mediante Aprendizaje Automático y Análisis Semántico
León Sandoval, Jhon Helmit; Ferro Escobar, Roberto
OAI-SDR is a clever hybrid search tool crafted for OAI-PMH repositories, blending the straightforward BM25 method—which quickly spots keywords—with smarter embedding techniques that really get the meaning behind what you’re looking for. It kicks off by gathering and tidying up metadata, then enriches the content and turns it into handy vector formats. From there, it mixes the results using something called Reciprocal Rank Fusion, and if you want, you can add a learning-to-rank twist to polish the top picks even more. To see how well it works, they checked it with measures like nDCG@10, MAP@10, Recall@10, how often users click (CTR), and how fast they find something useful.

Aproximación de un radio enlace PTP para misión crítica en Retail
(Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas) ROJAS SANCHEZ, DAVID EDUARDO; Ferro Escobar, Roberto
Digital transformation has redefined connectivity expectations, demanding network architectures that are not only fast but exceptionally robust. This paradigm is a challenge for missioncritical applications, where the congested radio spectrum degrades service quality. The retail sector is a clear example, where operations (payment processing, inventory, promotions) are entirely dependent on stable connections. An interruption, however brief, translates into direct economic losses. This behavior is accentuated in Colombia, where according to the Financial Superintendence[1], for the first quarter of 2025, 66% of all monetary operations were carried out via the Internet and mobile applications. This paper addresses this challenge in a hostile environment: a convention center where high-density crowds saturate mobile networks. Internal survey data validates the problem: 85% of attendees report connection failures, and over 80% of digital transactions take more than 2 minutes, affecting point-of-sale operations. To ensure business continuity, the feasibility of a 2.3 km point-to-point (PTP) radio link is proposed and analyzed. Specifically, a high-availability network architecture is designed, consisting of: • A primary link in the 60 GHz band, immune to interference from the shared spectrum. • A backup link in the 5 GHz band to mitigate atmospheric effects. The solution is managed by Layer 3 failover with IP SLA for near-instantaneous recovery and unifies the networks of both points using a VXLAN overlay, ensuring deterministic connectivity isolated from the public network chaos.

Detección de ataques de denegación de servicio en redes definidas por software
(Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas) Parra Fajardo, Jaime Andres; Ferro Escobar, Roberto
Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has emerged as an innovative alternative to traditional network architectures, offering flexibility, programmability, and a global view of topology through the separation of the control and data planes. However, this centralization also introduces new security challenges, as the controller becomes a critical point of vulnerability. Among the most significant threats are Denial-of-Service (DoS/DDoS) attacks, which can exhaust control-plane resources through malicious traffic flows and degrade overall network performance. This article presents a review of vulnerabilities in SDN environments, the main detection techniques proposed in literature and the key current challenges. Based on this analysis, a two-layer hybrid detection architecture is proposed, combining lightweight detection techniques for early anomaly identification with on-demand ML/DL based classifiers for suspicious traffic, highlighting the need for specialized mechanisms that preserve controller performance while optimizing computational cost.

Diseño de un sistema de control para la reutilización de aguas superficiales y subterráneas en terrenos agrícolas mediante tecnologías IOT.
Saldaña Anzola, Johan David; LOPEZ SARMIENTO, DANILO ALFONSO
The efficient and sustainable use of water resources currently represents a critical challenge in rural and agricultural areas, especially in those that rely on both surface and groundwater sources. Poor management of these resources not only leads to excessive or insufficient water usage but can also result in severe issues such as the overexploitation of aquifers and the depletion of surface water bodies. Furthermore, excessive water accumulation in agricultural lands—whether due to rainfall or uncontrolled irrigation—can cause soil erosion and the loss of essential nutrients, ultimately affecting both agricultural zones and rural residential areas over the long term. Traditional irrigation techniques lack automated systems and effective control mechanisms, leading to significant water waste, particularly in regions where water availability is limited or seasonal. Existing solutions do not adequately incorporate the necessary technologies to remotely monitor and manage irrigation systems, resulting in soil saturation and increased erosion risks, which in turn displace key nutrients essential for soil health and proper crop development. This project aims to design and develop an automated irrigation control system for agricultural fields using IoT technologies to optimize the use of surface and groundwater resources. The system is designed to efficiently monitor and manage both the collection and utilization of these water resources. Surface water will be collected through drainage and harvesting systems such as French drains, capturing both rainwater and groundwater. The integration of the IoT system will enable the remote activation and deactivation of the motor pump for the irrigation system, as well as the control of tank filling, providing a sustainable solution for agriculture. This will improve water use efficiency and contribute to environmental preservation.

Desarrollo de un sistema para cálculo de distancias en movilizaciones de torres de workover y perforación con data GPS
Ardila Ortiz, Camilo Andres; Cárdenas Castiblanco, José Roberto
In the Oil & Gas industry, there are drilling or workover rigs that perform drilling and well maintenance tasks for the production of oil and gas. The dynamics in this industry segment involve an operating company (such as Ecopetrol, Hocol, Parex, etc.) contracting a service provider company that owns RSUs, rigs, and/or drilling rigs to perform these tasks. These rigs are large mobile structures that are moved from one location to another, especially in rural areas and, in some cases, in difficult-to-access locations, to carry out these operations. The operating company establishes a contract in which it has a certain number of rigs available that can be moved according to its business plan in the blocks, clusters, or wells it controls. Based on the activities requested by the operating company, the rig owner executes and bills these activities. One specific case is mobilization, which is one of the most expensive processes. It is typically billed based on load, trajectory, and sometimes time as a measure of effort. While the load is easily known, as well as the distance, it is not always certain whether the planned route was actually taken and whether the kilometers billed were accurate, leading to potential financial losses for the rig owner. This project presents the development of a system that allows obtaining longitude and latitude coordinates for drilling and workover rigs using an IoT device that sends this data to the cloud for processing. This enables tracking the trajectory of a drilling or workover rig mounted on its base unit from one point to another, with the aim of providing accurate information to correctly calculate the mobilization operation cost and ensure proper billing to the operators by the service provider company. To address this problem, the proposed solution involves using a device that captures the coordinates while the rig is in motion. Once it arrives at a location and regains network connectivity, all stored data is sent for further processing. The data is then used to calculate the trajectory using the Haversine formula. The prototype outlines the need for a backup power system and the connection to GPS and Ethernet modules, among others, to obtain and transmit information such as longitude, latitude, time, altitude, date, and the number of satellites. This work focuses on developing the logic of the solution, including coding the microcontroller for capturing, storing, and transmitting information, as well as creating the IoT gateway service, implementing a broker, and establishing the basic business logic to determine the distance. Additionally, it outlines a potential physical implementation of the solution, taking the context into account. The project successfully captures and sends the data to the cloud for storage and calculates the distance traveled within a given time interval.

Vega Valencia, Brayan Andres; Gonzalez Riaño, Oscar Julian; Pedraza, Luis Fernando
This project focuses on the evaluation of a Small Cell 5G NSA (Non-Stand Alone) solution provided by a technology supplier in the context of the recent 5G spectrum allocation in Colombia. This development is crucial for Colombian ISPs seeking to commercially implement this new technology, utilizing the existing 4G LTE Core (EPC) infrastructure to facilitate the introduction of the advantages of mobile 5G through an NSA approach. The project's methodology is structured in four key stages: a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature, a detailed understanding of the low-level design provided by the technology supplier, the collection and analysis of data obtained from tests conducted up to June 2024, and a conclusive analysis of the data to validate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The results obtained provide valuable insights into the performance of Small Cell 5G NSA solutions in indoor environments, significantly contributing to existing knowledge and laying the groundwork for future implementations by ISPs in Colombia and other emerging markets. In terms of coverage, the Walking Test showed significant improvements after the implementation of Small Cells, with the signal strength RSRP improving from -98.66 dBm on LTE to -78.02 dBm on 5G NSA, and the maximum throughput in the area with the least coverage increasing from 17.42 Mbps to 1121.55 Mbps, respectively. Regarding energy consumption, the Symbol Shutdown and Carrier Shutdown tests achieved savings of 10% and 13%, highlighting the solution's capability to optimize energy usage without compromising service quality. These conclusions demonstrate that the 5G NSA solution improves network capacity, efficiency, and energy consumption, contributing to a more sustainable operation. The project marks a significant advancement in strengthening telecommunications infrastructure in Colombia, evaluating one of the first steps towards transitioning to advanced mobile technologies at a crucial time for 5G network deployment.
