Resumen
Solid waste management in Latin America and the Caribbean presents a challenging scenario. According to World Bank data, over 68% of waste generated in the region is disposed of in open dumps, a practice that causes severe damage to the environment and public health. In contrast, recycling accounts for only 4.5% of total waste management, significantly lower than in regions like Europe and North America. This gap can be attributed to various factors, including inadequate waste treatment infrastructure, lack of investment in clean technologies, low public awareness, and insufficient regulatory frameworks. The consequences of this situation are multiple and severe, including soil and water contamination, loss of valuable resources, and a decline in quality of life. To reverse this trend, urgent measures must be implemented, such as strengthening the circular economy, investing in infrastructure, promoting environmental education, fostering technological innovation, and establishing robust regulatory frameworks. Only through coordinated and decisive action by governments, businesses, and civil society can we achieve more sustainable and efficient waste management in Latin America and the Caribbean. This project involves the development of a digital platform that efficiently connects all actors involved in the recycling value chain: collectors, suppliers, and transformers. This digital platform, through functionalities such as geolocation, online material quotation, material tracking, and star-based rating of product and supplier quality, will optimize processes and facilitate the traceability of recyclable waste.
