Resumen
Tertiary road infrastructure is key to the social and economic development of Colombian rural areas, but it faces significant limitations due to the lack of updated information. More than 142,000 km of tertiary roads lack accurate inventory, which hinders the planning and execution of maintenance and improvement strategies. In response, this project proposes the development of a mobile mapping methodology based on the integration of GNSS technology with high-resolution georeferenced video capture systems, which makes it possible to generate precise positional data and audiovisual material that facilitates the technical characterization of road corridors.
The project will be implemented as a pilot in the municipality of La Palma, Cundinamarca, covering an approximate network of 100 km of tertiary roads. The mobile system, assembled on a vehicle, will allow the rapid collection of large volumes of information, which will subsequently be processed in a GIS to extract road characteristics (terrain type, road damage, and pavement conditions). The methodology proposes a low-cost alternative compared to traditional technologies such as LIDAR, with highly effective results in terms of time, coverage, and precision. This approach will strengthen technical capacities in topographic surveys applied to rural road infrastructure.
This project represents an important opportunity to improve the way road information is collected in Colombia, by proposing the use of more accessible, useful, and easy-toimplement geospatial technologies. Its application can change the way rural municipalities manage their roads, enabling better planning, cost reduction, and improvement in transportation services. Beyond the technical component, this project seeks to strengthen the connection between rural and urban areasto reduce territorial inequalities. For all these reasons, it is considered a strategic initiative for the country’s development.
