Resumen
The place names of territorial entities serve as windows to the past, since they reflect the history, culture and geography of the communities that originated them. Its study provides a broader perspective of the dynamics and changes in the territory. For this reason, it is important to analyze the Toponyms present in the IGAC National Base of Geographic Names, determining their degree of updating and correspondence with other specialized and non-specialized official sources of information. This is through a descriptive level investigation with a qualitative approach for the comparison of databases and information regarding the 1121 municipality place names present in the IGAC database, with different specialized and non-specialized official sources. This allowed us to determine that only 1.25% of the Base is outdated, and that only 14 of the municipalities analyzed presented any difference between the compared information. In conclusion, the differences presented largely resulted as a consequence of the colonization processes. Finally, recommendations are proposed for the management and updating of place names, taking into account factors such as community participation, the interrelation of information, geographical changes in the territory and access to information.
