Resumen
This research constitutes an effort to identify, interpret, and unveil the social representations of contemporary masculinities held by fourth-grade boys and girls. It aims to identify the influence and participation of schools in shaping these representations, as well as the weight exerted by hegemonic and traditional discourses inherent in some of our most patriarchal and heteronormative traditions. This is contrasted with the influence exerted by contemporary, emerging, and progressive discourses that currently promote alternative forms of constructing masculinities based on human rights, social justice, equality, and the recognition of diversity in its various components. This study drew on conceptual contributions from social psychology, as well as insights from other disciplinary fields such as sociology, psychology, and pedagogy. These provided an analytical perspective on how social representations are constructed and the different units of common sense and everyday life through which boys and girls identify masculinities around them. During the process, a hermeneutic study was conducted using a multipurpose instrument—a workshop that integrated group semi-structured interviews, participant observation, and the development of pedagogical activities such as collages, writing, and drawing. These activities yielded specific forms of representing masculinities in private settings such as the home and family, as well as in public contexts such as work, school, or culture, and around personal aspects such as emotions, behavior, physical appearance, or sexual identity.
