Abstract

The capabilities of satellite systems with active sensors, such as synthetic aperture radars (SAR), to acquire information from the earth's surface in almost any weather condition and the continuous observation of an event, allow flood identification and track them. With these data, the behavior of the flood can be determined as a result of the propagation of its waters to non-flooded areas which can be obtained with the use of SAR images in different periods of time. In this work, the plant cover that was affected as a result of this natural disaster occurred in the Santa Cruz de Mompós municipality, located in the Bolívar department, Colombia, was identified during the second half of 2010 in which the beginning of the the Niña phenomenon, thus generating 3 thematic maps of land cover based on 6 dual pol HH / HV SAR images of PALSAR sensor of ALOS satellite, for the dates of June 13, July 29 and October 29 2010 through the use of supervised classifications using digital image processing applied in SNAP and PCI Geomatica software. Subsequently, the affected areas by the flood are obtained using a geographic information systems approach within the ArcGIS software based on multitemporal analysis, for which the propagation of flood waters is determined and the areas affected by each vegetation cover between each observation period.
