Latón Ton Ton: El Steelpan y el ritmo de la resistencia al son de la percusión melódica en el Carnaval de Trinidad y Tobago

Abstract

This project describes and contextualizes both musically and socially the Steelpan and its relationship with the Trinidad and Tobago Carnival. The important aspects of the history of the island of Trinidad are described, providing the necessary information about the population, the carnival, and the music developed on the island, in order to help in the configuration of the relationship between the historical context in general, the birth of Steelpan and its evolution in the Trinidad Carnival. The realization of the current work was born from the need to inquire about melodic percussion and its relationship with the Carnival of Trinidad, profiling the musicological and ethnomusicological research development of this musical practice. It also enhances personal learning as a musician, enriching the academic community, in the sense that it will give the necessary tools to understand the Caribbean musical systems; likewise, it relates the musical system of the Lesser Antilles with the musical systems that are developed in South America.
