According to the United Nations Environment Program, about 11.2 billion tons of solid waste are currently generated, 400 million tons of plastic, waste that represents the bulk of highly recyclable materials along with paper, cardboard, glass, metals, electronic waste, among others (UN, 2024). The proper disposal and management of by-products generated by human activities still represents a highly complex challenge for societies, mainly in the third world, since, if we can highlight the participation of the recovery of these materials in places like Europe, where countries like Germany, Switzerland, Spain, among others, exceed 60% of waste, compared to Latin American countries where it generally reaches the worrying figure of 5% (Welle, 2021). In Colombia, the recycling rate is between approximately 12-14%, mainly paper, cardboard, metal and plastic are recovered as waste according to DANE (2019). This low percentage translates into negative effects on the environment, the economy, ecosystems and people's quality of life. In Bogotá, households are a significant source of these indicators, since the industry has chosen to abide by current regulations and the improvement of its economies (MADS, 2022), so residential families are needed as a key object of study in the economic development of waste recovery. There may be multiple factors that contribute to the collective disinterest in the segregation at source of the waste generated, the main ones being behavioral, demographic and cultural, for example, in the Madelena neighborhood, the socioeconomic stratum, the educational level, the customs or habits of the communities, the geographic location, the governance of territories, among others. In the complexes in particular, despite the favorable conditions such as access to public services, infrastructure, dissemination of information, etc., there is still a lack of interest in separating the waste that can be used from the “garbage”, and this situation could be caused by the efficient and organized separation of the waste generated daily. This assumption motivates the environmental project presented in this document and allows us to offer an alternative that aims to mitigate the effects caused by the problem described.
