Diversidad cultural: discurso visual en el Museo Nacional de Colombia

Abstract

Visual discourse is a fairly new field in the museum; to understand it as the main concept builder within the museum's walls is no easy task. Thus, this paper analyzes how the concept of cultural diersity is built in light of the goals set by the strategic plan “Bases for the Museo Nacional of the Future”, from a visual discourse viewpoint. This analysis is followed by an in-depth review of the concepts of cultural diversity and visual discourse within the museum; later, this paper examines the historical and current function of said institution in a society which is today recognized as diverse. Such diversity must be made visible in our nation's memory, anchoring us in the past without rewriting it. Visual discourse analysis reviews not just the pieces shown on the wall but also the way they correlate, communicate and form a particular view of cultural diversity in an institution that symbiotically ties the communicative and educational realms.
