Resumen
This monograph analyzes plumbing from an environmental perspective, recognizing it as a key tool for sustainability, efficient water use, and public health protection. Through a methodology that combines literature review, regulatory analysis, case studies, and technical field experience, it identifies the main challenges and opportunities faced by sustainable plumbing in both urban and rural settings. Modern technologies such as smart sensors (IoT), low-flow fixtures, composting toilets, and rainwater and greywater harvesting systems are explored, demonstrating how their implementation can significantly reduce water consumption, prevent leaks, and promote more environmentally responsible buildings. The study also examines the materials used in plumbing systems, assessing their environmental impact, recyclability, durability, and toxicity. It includes the analysis of successful experiences such as the Bullitt Center (USA) and the Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas (Colombia), showing that the integration of plumbing, sustainable architecture, and environmental management is not only possible but urgent. Finally, from the perspective of a certified hydraulic and sanitary plumbing technician, the paper reflects on the importance of transforming plumbing into an active tool for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthening water governance. It concludes that a more conscious, inclusive, and environmentally aligned approach to plumbing is essential for advancing toward a fair, resilient, and sustainable development model.
