This document presents the results of research on the representations of a group of students of primary basic education, on separation of mixtures to obtain natural aromatic oils. This process involved the design, validation and implementation of a sequence of teaching activities in which reflections of pedagogical and didactic order were contemplated in relation to the value of semiotic representations in the teaching of sciences. The research was implemented under the Educational Action Research Model, based on the validation of a series of activities by strata. The qualitative methodological approach allowed an interpretation of the meanings that students construct on the separation of mixtures. The instruments used were the field diary and the sequence of activities; the technique used was the content analysis of student productions, aided by the use of specialized software. Representations elaborated by the students were obtained, distinguishing between plant materials, solvents and separation methods carried out. These representations were systematized and analyzed from the perspective of external representations, product of which analysis categories were established, codified and characterized with the help of the MAXQDA® Software.
