Resumen
The pollution caused by single-use plastics is a severe environmental issue that Colombia is addressing through Law 2232 of 2022. This legislation establishes a framework for progressively reducing these products and promotes sustainable alternatives. Colombia generates approximately 1.25 million tons of plastic waste annually, much of which ends up in landfills or the natural environment without proper management. In response, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has implemented the National Policy for Single-Use Plastic Substitution and the Productive Reconversion Plan. This policy assesses the current situation and potential challenges of implementation, while the plan focuses on adapting the industry and workforce for an effective transition to eco-friendly materials. However, the transition faces obstacles in terms of infrastructure, business adaptability, and social commitment to achieve its objectives within the established timeframe. In conclusion, reducing single-use plastics in Colombia represents an important advancement in environmental sustainability and serves as a cultural and economic shift that could inspire similar initiatives in other countries.
