Resumen
In a globalized and interconnected world like the one we live in now, Colombia has been relegated year after year to the last positions in the results that certify the proficiency levels of the English language, thereby it is consider as a problem for the academic, cultural and social development, to promote a better life quality. Through a descriptive and exploratory investigations, this document focuses on the relations among the English teaching methods, syllabus and basic competence standards to determine which factors take place to get such low results. Thanks to class observations, field diaries, interviews and documentary analysis, it is possible to conclude the importance of the teaching methods as well as all the aspects related to the curriculum which may influence in quality learning process for the students. Therefore this project opens the doors to new investigations related to the curriculum components, to the implementation of teaching methods which may allow students reach international standards, and self-reflection concerning to the teaching tasks, all in order to improve not only the English level but also the development of the country.
