Resumen
This research was carried out in the “Ciencia y Tecnologia Nuclear” Research Group from the Chemistry Department (UD), and their results are related to the applications of nuclear science and technology from the implementation of the “Ludlum” counting system ("Scaler Ratemeter-2200 ") connected to Geiger-Müller (GM) detectors 44-7 with terminal window and 44-9 pancake type with β radiation source.
The use of nuclear instrumentation in the study of ionizing radiation facilitates understanding of their properties, features, applications and implications for humans so the aim of this research was to establish the operating parameters of the GM detectors mentioned in detection and characterization of Sr-90 β radiation, in order to develop nuclear experiments serve as basic material for training of students and staff involved in the nuclear field.
The operating voltage was set which corresponds to 900V and parameters of length (100V–90V) and slope of the plateau (5,32 – 7,1 for GM 44-7 and 44-9), that show the quality and good performance of these detectors. The statistical treatment of the data, as well as some nuclear experiments were performed to recognize the randomness of nuclear decays, check the inverse square law, determinate the background radiation and evaluate aspects of backscatter and attenuation of beta radiation. With all this it is possible to disseminate basic knowledge of nuclear science in different areas.
