Resumen
The marketing of usable household waste in Colombia is a business that has great growth potential. The country produces approximately 12 million tons of solid waste per year, of which only 16% is used. This means that there is a large amount of waste that could be reused or recycled, but that currently ends up in landfills, contaminating the environment. The use of waste is an activity that contributes to environmental sustainability, since it reduces the amount of waste that goes to landfills, saves natural resources and reduces the emission of greenhouse gases. In addition, the use of waste can generate employment and economic opportunities for communities. In Colombia, the use of waste is regulated by decree 1505 of 2003, which establishes that municipalities must implement programs for separation at the source and use of waste. The law also establishes that users of the public sanitation service must pay a use fee, which is used to finance the use programs. The usable waste market in Colombia is growing at a rapid pace. In recent years, investments in recycling plants and the infrastructure necessary for waste collection and transportation have increased. In addition, new technologies have been developed for the use of waste, which has increased the demand for these materials.
