Abstract

The present monograph is a categorization of the motivations that undergraduate students majoring in Physics at the Francisco José de Caldas District University have in their choice to become teachers, based on the FIT-Choice scale. To achieve this, a mixed-methods study was conducted on two populations, namely, first-semester students and last-semester students. For the first group, Sample 1 included students who were between 0% and 50% through their program, while Sample 2 included students who were between 51% and 100% through their program. This categorical study is related to both extrinsic and intrinsic motivations, showing that these students are more motivated by intrinsic motivations than extrinsic ones. It is therefore concluded that these students are potential teachers who will pursue their careers not so much for extrinsic rewards but for personal satisfactions such as contributing to society and working with children and adolescents. This could lead to a decrease in dropout rates from the program.
