Resumen
Higher education in Colombia faces a series of challenges, with the inequality of opportunities being one of the most critical, along with the need to ensure quality education for students and the decreasing number of applicants to universities. In this context, the Environmental Engineering program at Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas has questioned the relationship between students' residential areas and their academic performance. This study arises from that inquiry, implementing statistical tools such as R Studio and geospatial analysis tools like ArcGIS to emphasize the correlation between academic performance and students' places of residence. The analysis includes the creation of a database to consolidate relevant information on student performance, the proposal of an indicator to address students' municipalities of origin and residential areas, and the use of Pearson's correlation in a sample of students who enrolled in the curricular project between the 2016-1 and 2023-1 semesters. The goal is to answer the question: How does students' place of residence influence the academic performance of the Environmental Engineering program between the 2016-1 and 2023-1 semesters at Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas? (Being this semesters our study population).
