Resumen
This work emphasizes the construction of citizenship based on the experience of participation and democracy in the school environment. It is emphasized that the school as a stage of social interaction is important to create real meeting spaces for students to practice democracy and affect the decisions that are made and not as it has been happening that the provisions are taken unilaterally leaving aside to the others who also have to say. The reflection revolved around the perception that the students of the student council of the Villas del Progreso IED school had about the categories mentioned, these were taking a clear focus, such as student participation, democracy in school and active citizenship. Student participation makes sense when there is the interest of individuals to take responsibility for their reality and it becomes relevant at the moment when it is supported and strengthened by doing, student leadership and work among all. The democracy in the school is a permanent task related to the life of the people since it is implicit in the actions and decisions that are taken permanently; and active citizenship, is an invited act; therefore, it requires the commitment of all for the citizen to be built permanently, this implies thinking about democratic practices in the school context with greater leadership of the students to guarantee what does not exist.
