Resumen
This paper describes the application of the K index for the geomagnetic activity in October 2013, taking into account the nature of the geomagnetic data captured by the Fúquene Geomagnetic Observatory, Colombia, and applying the Linear Elimination methodology developed by the Finnish Meteorological Institute ( FMI,). To determine the value of the K index, it is vital to calculate the Regular Daily Variation (SR) curve from a harmonic fifth-degree adjustment of Fourier series for the discrimination between the local geomagnetic field fluctuations caused by disturbed solar wind and those characteristic fluctuations of daily behavior, being cataloged as K and non-K variations, respectively. The values obtained from the geomagnetic index K are compared with the planetary index Kp and a series of phenomena associated with geomagnetic storms: solar wind speed, magnitude of the interplanetary magnetic field Bz component and electron flow
