Resumen
In this research, Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales School’s carbon footprint of the year 2019 was found, taking as a reference the ISO 14064-1:2006 methodology. There was identify four emissions sources: electrical energy consumption, generation of solid waste, fuel consumption derived from academic practices, and paper consumption. The activities associated with each identified sources were evaluated in order to collect the relevant data, and with the respective emission factor, the CO2 equivalent emissions value were found, giving as a result a carbon footprint of 481.92 ton CO2, distributed in: 80.03 ton CO2 eq derived from electrical energy consumption, 365.99 ton CO2 eq come from the solid waste generation, 0.57 ton CO2 eq and 35.32 ton CO2 eq associated with paper and fuel consumption, respectively. Finally, strategies to reduce and compensate the campus’s carbon footprint were formulated, which was distributed in 5 approaches: the first one was aimed at reduce the electrical energy consumption, the second one was made to create a correct solid waste management, the third and fourth ones were aimed at the process of automotive fleet contracting by the university and the responsible use of stationery products respectively; and the last approach were aimed at a carbon sequestration system construction. For each proposed strategy, a brief description and an implementation costs estimation were made, as well as a prediction of the carbon footprint reduction if strategies are implemented. It was obtain a total carbon footprint reduction of 30% approximately, and a budget of about $163’751.096.
