Resumen
Guararé and guararey, salsa and changüí, bass and piano, marímbula and tres; all these pairs are part of three compared versions of the song “El guararey de Pastora”, which we present in order to discover the transformation that this composition of Roberto Baute Sagarra has had, in two recorded versions in the middle of 1970s decade. Played in the rhythm of changüí, as it has become known within the most faithful exponents of this traditional genre of eastern Cuba, the version “El guararey de Pastora” by the Grupo Changüí, represents the starting point of this comparison with the another two versions: “El guararey de Pastora” by Juan Formell y Los Van Van, and “Guararé” by Orquesta de Ray Barretto. From the experience of playing these kind of music, confronted with the analysis of some specific functional, rhythmic, harmonic and textural components, but deepening into the structural analysis, we propose to describe the main stylistic characteristics of each analyzed version, by establishing their differences in morphology, organology, their interpretive global elements and, with all this, maybe to discover their essence.
