Resumen
The waste, both hazardous and non-hazardous, generated by the various activities carried out in the health care services of the Colombian League Against Cancer, requires special attention to ensure high standards of quality and safety for patients and collaborators. In order to improve internal waste management, the internship focused on structuring the management of ordinary, usable and hazardous solid waste at the Colombian League Against Cancer, with the aim of minimising environmental impacts. To achieve this objective, the methodology was designed in three fundamental stages: (I) documentary and waste diagnosis, as well as the review of the legal matrix, (II) analysis of the information gathered in the different diagnoses, (III) execution of the improvement plan that included activities such as the continuous training of employees, the implementation of an environmental campaign with a green marketing approach, as well as the updating of procedures and formats related to environmental management. In relation to the data obtained in the diagnoses, it was found that the chemotherapy unit is the main generator of bio-sanitary hazardous waste. It was also observed that 30.35% of usable waste comes from the chemotherapy unit and the medicine storage area, with the most frequent materials being plastic, paper and cardboard, in their respective order. As a result of the improvement actions implemented, an increase of 90% in the rate of usable waste was achieved. In addition, modifications were made to 90.90% of the documents in the environmental area, including the updating of the manual for the integral management of waste derived from health care and the registration of documents in the Almera System, integrating digital and physical information of the processes developed in the area of environmental management. These processes contributed to optimising efficiency and access to information.
