Resumen
This research deals with topics at the technological level, providing the most precise answer to the investigation question on the design criteria for solid waste transfer stations in Latin America, while taking into account fundamental aspects such as climate, the type of waste to be treated and the different factors that could affect an operational process of collection and transport along a route established by the regulations and the performance of the companies in charge of the service.
The concept of transfer station is highlighted to the facilities used for the rationalisation of both the economic and the energetic resources, as well as the respective reduction of the environmental impact caused by the construction of projects in favour of population growth, in conjunction with the need for solid waste handling with integrated management processes. A description of the procedures, design criteria, requirements variables and types of transfer stations suggested in the literature, allowing for specific usage; enabling the optimisation of the areas in the gathering zones according to the recycling activities of by-products.
It is essential to mention the current status of the transfer stations in operation, the legislation in force, the basic design and construction requirements. Through the research conducted, it is expected to address the research review of transfer station types and design criteria.
