Resumen
Colombia has 568,769 hectares of planted forest of which 36,986 hectares belong to the Acacia mangium species, this species was introduced to Colombia since 1990 and is recognized for its rapid growth and ability to develop satisfactorily in degraded and eroded soils. This species does not have available information regarding the sawmill processes in the country, ignoring the potential productivity of wood for the furniture and construction sector. To counteract the above, this study evaluated the performance in sawmill of 556 individuals with small diameters, 278 of diametric class from 10 to 14.99 cm and 278 from 15 to 20 cm, from plantations located in the Colombian Orinoquia. The trees sampled presented mean values of total height of 12.76 m, commercial height of 7 m, DAP of 0.14 m and form factor of 0.79. By manufacturing two traditional types of product for the market, the utilization coefficient reached 39%. Adding two non-traditional cutting thicknesses, the use reached up to 49%, this by re-sawing shorelines and using curved logs, generating new articulated pieces to the national productive chain and involving finger joint-type processes. Experience has shown that better planned processes from the reality of the national forestry of the species, can sustainably improve the economic and therefore social benefits of A. mangium forest plantations in Colombian Orinoquia.
