Resumen
The Girardot marketplace generates 60% organic waste, most of which is not properly disposed of. Factors such as a lack of environmental awareness, insufficient infrastructure, and the absence of effective policies have aggravated this situation, leading to environmental contamination, pest proliferation, and an overload on final disposal systems. This document proposes a strategy for managing and utilizing organic waste in the Girardot marketplace, Cundinamarca. The lack of source separation and inadequate waste management are identified as significant environmental issues. Therefore, an approach based on environmental education and proper waste utilization is proposed, emphasizing the need for effective source separation to minimize the loss of potentially reusable waste. According to UAESP (2014), for any organic waste utilization system to be implemented, organic waste must no longer be considered as ordinary waste and must be separated from other waste streams. Additionally, this study explores alternatives to enhance the potential use of organic waste through techniques such as vermiculture and composting.
