Resumen
The cello has been present in Colombia since colonial times, although its exact arrival is difficult to pinpoint. During the 18th century, it was used in religious ceremonies in places such as the Cathedral of Bogotá. At the end of the 18th century and beginning of the 19th century, the cello began to be integrated more formally into the musical life of cities such as Bogotá and Medellín. In the second half of the 19th century, figures such as maestro Casimiro de Lugo included the cello in their orchestras, and there were mentions of this instrument in cultural and social activities. Although the cello was not always the protagonist, its participation in various repertoires and its presence in social and religious events stood out in the musical life of that time. Over time, European influence and immigrants also helped to consolidate the use of the cello, being a key element in the configuration of academic music in Colombia, in its most notable groups of instrumentalists but above all in the compositions, which, championing the most avant-garde techniques and styles, were seeing the light of day over the years.
