Resumen
The objective of this research project is to analyze the impact of the increase in the rodent population in public spaces in the UPZ Suba Tibabuyes neighborhood, located in the city of Bogotá, and how this situation directly affects public health and the quality of life of its inhabitants. Through a review of documents, field observation, and analysis of official data, various factors were identified that have contributed to the proliferation of these animals, including: poor solid waste management, inadequate placement of containers in unpaved areas, lack of sewer maintenance, and a weak civic culture regarding hygiene and care for the environment.
The study focused particularly on the species Rattus norvegicus (sewer rat), which has established itself as one of the main urban pests due to its ability to adapt, rapid reproduction, and potential to transmit zoonotic diseases such as leptospirosis, hantavirus, toxoplasmosis, and salmonellosis, among others. These diseases pose a constant risk to the population, especially in areas with high population density and poor sanitary conditions.
