Resumen
This monograph presents a study about the behavior of plastic optical fibers as a mean for multimedia transmissions in small dimensions environments, such as: domestic homes, offices and buildings, also known as HAN networks. The study and analysis starts from a theoretical standpoint by collecting all the characteristics of this kind of fibers and engages two fundamental problems that optical communications systems face: dispersion and attenuation; additionally, there is an analysis about current and future multimedia, in terms of the bandwidth they will consume; later, through simulations, an analysis about the transmission capacity of optical fibers in multimedia applications and then, the effects of attenuation in the POF are experimentally validated, to finally propose a topology that can provide a solution to the problems of bandwidth present in multimedia HAN networks.
