Resumen
Throughout time, mankind has developed technologies that have boosted economic, social, and, in part, environmental development. In this last aspect, the thermovalorization of municipal solid waste (MSW), also known as Waste to Energy (WTE), has established itself as one of the most efficient technologies for the integrated management of solid waste. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of MSW thermovalorization as a strategy for sustainable energy production, contributing to both more efficient waste management and sustainable development. Thermovalorization is presented as an alternative to reduce waste accumulation in landfills and, at the same time, generate energy, promoting a circular economy model. Thermovalorization is presented as an alternative to reduce the accumulation of waste in landfills and, at the same time, generate energy, promoting a circular economy model. First, the available technologies for thermovalorization are evaluated to identify the most appropriate according to the local context and the types of waste generated in the region. Then, opportunities for integrating thermovalorization energy production into the city's waste management and sustainability policies are analyzed, facilitating the transition to a circular economy. In addition, global regulations and policies related to MSW thermovalorization are investigated, taking as a reference those countries that have successfully implemented this technology. Finally, recommendations for the implementation and optimization of thermovalorization projects are proposed, considering key environmental, economic, and social factors for their long-term viability.
