Testing english reading proficiency in 8th and 9th semester foreign language students: A descriptive comparative study

dc.description | El Ministerio de Educación de Colombia estableció que, para el próximo año, todos los estudiantes graduados de programas de pregrado de enseñanza de inglés deben tener un nivel C1 de inglés. Sin embargo, no todas las universidades cuentan con instrumentos adecuados para recopilar datos sobre el nivel de sus estudiantes. Este trabajo recopila datos sobre el nivel de competencia lectora en inglés de 20 estudiantes de 8° y 9° semestre de la Licenciatura en Lenguas Extranjeras con Énfasis en Inglés de la Universidad Distrital. Para la recolección de datos, utilizamos la prueba del componente de lectura del B2 First. Nuestros resultados mostraron que los participantes tienen un nivel bajo de competencia lectora en inglés y no alcanzan el nivel C1 esperado propuesto por el Ministerio de Educación. | |
dc.description.abstract | The Ministry of Education of Colombia established that for the next year, all the students graduated in English-teaching undergraduate degrees must have a C1 level of English. However, not all the universities have concurrent instruments to gather data about the level of their students. This paper collects data about the reading proficiency level of English of 20 8 th and 9th semester students majoring a degree in foreign languages with an emphasis on English at the Universidad Distrital. To gather the data, we used the B2 first reading component test. Our results showed that the participants have low reading proficiency in English and do not achieve the expected C1 level proposed by the Ministry of Education. | |
