Resumen
The following research-creation thesis reports on the design and implementation of an auto-response chatbot for WhatsApp used as a mediator in the development of two key components of emotional intelligence, which are self-awareness and self-regulation, in order to enhance the communicative competences of students of English as a foreign language. The research addresses a problem evidenced during the review of literature and previous research regarding the teaching and learning process of English in Colombia, founded on the deficiency of resources that support and take advantage of the connection between the emotional dimension of the student and his or her learning processes of a foreign language. Therefore, one of the objectives of this research is to design a chatbot that allows the development of these emotional intelligence competencies and consequently influence the communicative competencies of students of English as a foreign language. Likewise, the research proposes the use of a tool such as the auto-response chatbot to solve the deficiency of resources focused on developing self-awareness and self-regulation processes in the context of learning English. The functionality and appropriation of the designed chatbot was tested for one month with ten students from the bilingual center, Centro Colombo Americano, the results showed a positive take up of the tool by the participants who agree that the chatbot helped them realize the type of activities that worked best according to their learning style and they also support the usefulness of the chatbot as a tool to consolidate and practice before and after English class.
