Resumen
The National Government, with the support of the Attorney General's Office and the Ministry of Finance, is promoting a proposal to remove three zeros from the Colombian peso. This measure aims to simplify commercial transactions, facilitate corporate accounting, and reduce operational costs within the financial system. According to economist Luis Alberto Rodríguez, after decades of stable inflation, Colombia has accumulated zeros that are now unnecessary and complicate comparisons with international currencies, making this reform a vital step toward exchange rate modernization.
Beyond administrative efficiency, the proposal has a strategic background in the fight against organized crime. By requiring the exchange of physical banknotes for a new currency family, it forces the legalization of capital hidden in "caletas" (illegal stashes), as illicit money cannot enter the formal banking system without justification. In this way, currency redenomination serves simultaneously as a monetary policy tool and a mechanism for financial transparency
