    The Weekly Journal of the New Kingdom of Granada was the first scientific publication in the Viceroyalty of New Granada. It was printed at the printing press of Bruno Espinosa de los Monteros and was under the direction of the Popayán-born scientist Francisco José de Caldas. In the issues corresponding to May 1808, Caldas expounds on the breadth of his interests, and the function of the Astronomical Observatory of Santafé de Bogotá (of which he was director) is fully reflected in the May 1808 issues. In these editions, Caldas brought together several of his contributions, including three articles focused on systematic observation: “Meteorological Observations for the month of April 1808 made at the Astronomical Observatory of Santafé de Bogotá by D. Francisco José de Caldas,” the meticulous “Observation of the total lunar eclipse of May 9, 1808,” and the “Meteorological Observations for the month of May 1808 made at the Astronomical Observatory of Santafé de Bogotá by D. Francisco José de Caldas.” Additionally, the important essay “The Influence of Climate on Organized Beings” was included, in which the author is identified as Don Francisco José de Caldas, a distinguished member of the Botanical Expedition to Santafé de Bogotá and head of the Astronomical Observatory of that capital.
