Resumen
The Voices and Regions program discussed the topic of public space in Juan de Acosta and other Colombian cities, highlighting its impact on the community and the challenges of its regulation. The discussion emphasized how unemployment has driven many citizens to occupy public spaces informally, setting up street vending stands on sidewalks and roads.
Participants compared urban planning in developed countries, where cities were designed to accommodate population growth, to Colombia, where public space encroachment has resulted from structural issues like unemployment and lack of planning. The conversation referenced Bogotá’s urban transformation under Antanas Mockus and Enrique Peñalosa, particularly the introduction of bike lanes and public space recovery programs.
In Juan de Acosta, the interviewees pointed out how the lack of sidewalks and the expansion of private constructions have negatively impacted pedestrian mobility. Possible solutions were discussed, including the recovery of public spaces through legal complaints and popular actions. The program concluded with a call for citizen awareness and better regulations to ensure fair use of public space.
