Resumen
Voices and Regions delved into the issue of women's political participation, revealing a complex interplay of historical, cultural and social factors that have limited women's representation in political spheres. The program highlighted that: • Historical and cultural barriers: Historically, women have been relegated to domestic roles, which limits their access to public spheres. These deeply entrenched social norms have perpetuated gender inequalities and hampered women's political ambitions. • Symbolic violence: The concept of symbolic violence was introduced, emphasizing how social norms and expectations subtly reinforce gender roles and maintain the status quo. • Importance of women's perspectives: The program emphasized the unique perspectives and experiences that women bring to the political arena, arguing that their inclusion is essential to creating more inclusive and equitable societies. • Challenges and progress: The debate recognized the progress made in recent years, such as the establishment of gender quotas and the increase in women's participation in local governments and social movements. However, remaining challenges were also highlighted, such as the persistence of gender stereotypes, limited representation at higher levels of government, and the need for more effective implementation of gender equality policies. • Strategies for change: Speakers discussed various strategies to promote women's political participation, such as fostering sisterhood among women, challenging gender stereotypes, and increasing women's representation in decision-making bodies.
