Resumen
In the hydrocarbon industry, crude oil storage is an essential part of oil and its derivatives production, as it requires specialized storage at all stages (extraction and refining). Storage serves as an accumulator between production and transportation, and it also allows for the settling of water and sludge in the crude oil before it is dispatched through pipelines. Additionally, it provides operational flexibility to refineries. In the present work, conducted to obtain the title of mechanical engineer, I carried out the design of a vertical fixed-roof tank for crude oil storage with a capacity of 200,000 gallons, which was projected to operate for 40 years. To achieve an optimal design, all necessary considerations documented by the American Petroleum Institute (API) were taken into account. This institute issues a series of standards and regulations based on accumulated experience. Specifically, the API 650 code is recommended for the design and construction of steel tanks with welded joints for atmospheric pressure oil storage.
