Abstract

In this edition of Voices and Regions, our guest reflects on the importance of voting and the citizens' right to freely choose their representatives in elections. This discussion highlights the two fundamental models of democratic governance: participatory democracy and representative democracy, and their significance in Colombia. Participatory democracy allows citizens to have a direct influence on public decision-making through mechanisms such as referendums, plebiscites, popular consultations, and open councils. This model strengthens civic engagement and broadens public discourse on matters of collective interest. On the other hand, representative democracy is based on electing leaders and representatives who legislate and govern on behalf of the people. In Colombia, this system forms the foundation of the democratic model, where citizens vote in periodic and pluralistic elections to ensure the renewal and legitimacy of political power. Understanding the importance of voting is essential for strengthening democracy. Voting not only determines leaders and public policies but also reinforces civic participation and responsibility. Each vote is a tool for social change, contributing to the construction of a more just and equitable society.
