Resumen
In this section of the Voices and Regions program, the discussion focuses on access to public spaces and the challenges faced by the inhabitants of Armenia when moving safely and efficiently. The difficulties are even greater for people with reduced mobility, who encounter physical and infrastructural barriers that restrict their right to free movement.
Access to public space refers to the equitable use of streets, sidewalks, parks, and other shared areas. However, in cities like Armenia, poor infrastructure conditions present significant obstacles, such as damaged sidewalks, lack of ramps, inadequate signage, and unsafe pedestrian crossings. These issues particularly affect people with disabilities, the elderly, and caregivers, who need accessible environments to ensure their autonomy and safety.
Free mobility is a fundamental right recognized by laws such as Law 1618 of 2013 in Colombia, which mandates the implementation of universal accessibility in public spaces. Despite these legal frameworks, challenges remain in enforcing policies that ensure inclusive mobility and the removal of physical and social barriers.
Improving access to public space requires local authorities to upgrade infrastructure, promote universal design, and ensure that all citizens can move with dignity and equal opportunities.
