Resumen
In this section of the Voces y Regiones program, the discussion focuses on the role of citizen oversight bodies (veedurías) and peace judges (jueces de paz) in Colombia, highlighting their importance within the State and society.
Citizen oversight bodies, established under Law 850 of 2003, serve as mechanisms of social control, allowing citizens to monitor public administration, ensuring transparency and efficiency in the management of resources and the execution of government projects. These organizations enable active citizen participation in overseeing collective rights and ensuring compliance with public policies.
Additionally, the role of peace judges, regulated by Law 497 of 1999, is explained. These judges act as community mediators in resolving minor disputes, focusing on conciliation and dialogue to promote peaceful conflict resolution. Their role is especially relevant in rural areas or regions with limited access to formal justice systems.
Both mechanisms are crucial for strengthening social cohesion and participatory democracy, empowering citizens to take part in decision-making processes and fostering peaceful coexistence.
