Resumen

In this interview, Sonia speaks with Juan Rafael Martínez, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center, about Stephen Hawking's legacy following his death at age 76. Martínez highlights Hawking's fundamental contribution to the study of black holes, uniting Einstein's general relativity with quantum mechanics. He explained "Hawking radiation," which suggests that black holes are not truly black and can evaporate, although he acknowledged that Hawking revised his initial theory upon recognizing that information is not lost within them. Martínez emphasized Hawking's role as a great science communicator, comparing him to Carl Sagan for his ability to make complex physics accessible to the general public. They also discussed Hawking's battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), highlighting his mental triumph over physical limitations. Finally, they described Hawking as a humanist concerned about the future of humanity in the face of advancements such as artificial intelligence, underscoring the importance of rational thought over religious belief in interpreting the universe.
