Resumen

Descripción

This article explains how the chola paceña, through the popular festivities of the Great Power (Gran Poder), managed to reverse the negative stereotypes that were concocted about it. This took place especially at beginning of the 20th century, when a whole discourse was developed to make the social group connected to it fall behind. Larson (2001) called it the anti-miscegenation discourse. In order to reverse such stereotypes, the prestige of the fraternity was used and its economic potential was proven, thereby reclaiming its place in society. Above all, that community imposed its clothing, its most visible ethnic marker, in the face of a society that discriminates and racializes.
