Resumen
In this section of the Voces y Regiones program, the role of citizen oversight committees and peace judges in Colombia is analyzed, with a particular focus on their importance in the department of Quindío and its capital, Armenia. These citizen participation mechanisms play a crucial role in strengthening transparency, conflict resolution, and promoting a more participatory democracy.
Citizen oversight committees, regulated by Law 850 of 2003, allow the population to monitor public administration, ensuring the proper use of resources and the efficient execution of state projects. In Armenia, these organizations play a key role in overseeing local initiatives related to infrastructure, health, and education, ensuring that government decisions respond to the real needs of the community.
Meanwhile, peace judges, established by Law 497 of 1999, act as community mediators in the resolution of minor conflicts. In Quindío, their work is especially important in rural areas where access to formal justice is limited. Through conciliation and dialogue, peace judges help resolve disputes peacefully, strengthening social cohesion and community harmony in the region.
These mechanisms not only allow the citizens of Armenia and Quindío to actively participate in public management and oversight but also promote a culture of dialogue and cooperation. This active involvement is essential for sustainable development and the construction of a more equitable and inclusive society.
