| dc.description.abstract | The transport of crude oil through metallic pipelines is a critical activity in the petroleum industry. However, these structures are constantly exposed to aggressive environments that promote corrosion, such as the presence of chlorides, gases like CO₂ and H₂S, water, and thermal variations. This situation is especially critical in crude oil transfer systems, where operating conditions intensify material deterioration, compromising its structural integrity, increasing operational risks, economic losses, and environmental impacts. This undergraduate thesis project aims to evaluate the corrosion rate of API 5L Grade 52 steel—commonly used in hydrocarbon transportation systems—applying impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) under controlled conditions that simulate a real-world operating environment with the presence of chlorides. The goal is to obtain reliable technical information that will allow for the optimization of the design and performance of corrosion protection systems. The experimental methodology is divided into several phases. First, the environmental conditions, such as pH, temperature, chloride concentration, and electrolyte characteristics, will be established. Then, API 5L Grade 52 steel test specimens will be fabricated according to international standards such as ASTM G1, G31, and ISO 16809, and a cathodic protection system consisting of a direct current source, inert anodes, and a reference electrode will be installed on them. During the test, electrochemical measurements (open-circuit potentials, polarization curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy) and physicochemical analyses will be performed to calculate the corrosion rate and compare the results between protected and unprotected samples. A significant reduction in the corrosion rate is expected in the protected specimens, validating the effectiveness of the ICCP system in chloride environments. The methodology and results obtained in this evaluation consolidate a technical framework for the application of impressed current to API 5L Grade 52 pipe. This study contributes to the field of corrosion engineering by providing specific experimental data on the behavior and wear rate of API 5L Grade 52 pipe under impressed current cathodic protection systems. These results, documented in the thickness and weight loss analyses of this work, serve as a technical reference for optimizing maintenance in hydrocarbon transportation networks. | |
