Abstract

In this thesis, two intertwined topics are investigated, both the investigative part and the practical part of composition. It is looked at how music and film come together and how film music develops to be predominant in this art, where it shapes two representative film eras: silent film and modern film. Furthermore, the qualities and the particular conditions of a composer for realizing film music as well as his role within a huge industry that conditions artistic production are analyzed. By giving examples of different composers during different eras, the approach towards the original soundtrack (OST) is examined. A glossary allows the communication between the film director and the composer, which is important for the composition process and the understanding of a technical language. Then, the realization of the soundtrack of two short films is presented and the reflection on the gained experience during this composition process is depicted. On top of that, the approach to, the different photography and the composition level of production and postproduction of these two short films are compared.
