This image records a news item published on March 7, 1882 by the newspaper El Conservador, where the following is reported: "This monument that cost the nation so much, has been completely abandoned for a long time by the authorities: the mob began for stoning the statues, he immediately stole part of the iron lattice, then began to rip out the pilasters, and, if things continue as they are, he will end up knocking down the column. We bring this fact to the notice of the Secretary of Public Works, who It seems natural that he be in charge of the conservation of the few public monuments that we have in case he has not seen it, nor has there been until now who tells him so."

La presente imagen registra una noticia publicada el día 07 de marzo de 1882 por el periódico El Conservador en donde se relata lo siguiente " Este monumento que tanto costó á la nación, está hace tiempo en completo abandono por parte de la autoridad: principio el populacho por apedrear las estatuas, en seguida se robó parte del enrejado de hierro, luego comenzó á arrancar las pilastras, y, si las cosas siguen como van, acabara por echar abajo la columna. Ponemos este hecho en conocimiento del señor secretario de Fomento, que parece natural esté encargado de la conservación de los pócos monumentos públicos que tenemos por si no lo ha visto, ni ha habido hasta ahora quién se lo diga. "
