Abstract

The image contains news about the Colegio Mayor de San Bartolomé, which is an educational establishment of the Company of Jesus in Colombia. It was founded on September 27, 1604 by the archbishop of Santafé de Bogotá, Bartolomé Lobo Guerrero, and the first Jesuits who settled in the New Kingdom of Granada. It is the oldest school in Latin America, having operated uninterruptedly since 1604.

In 1910, a contract was approved for the support of the Colegio de San Bartolomé. According to this contract:

The Government left, as until today, to the Reverend Fathers of the Society of Jesus the buildings of San Bartolomé and the old Seminary, as well as the income from the former, for a period of eighteen years. The Government undertook not to occupy, even in time of war, militarily, the school buildings. The Reverend Fathers could make any modifications to the buildings that they deemed appropriate to appropriate them for their purpose. The improvements already made in the building by the Fathers of the Company and those that they made in the future would remain in favor of the Government upon the expiration of the contract. Education would continue to be free, and the courses earned at the Colegio de San Bartolomé would be considered university courses, without the need for a new qualification. This historic contract offers a view of education and school administration in that period. The Colegio de San Bartolomé continues to be an important reference in education in Colombia.
