Abstract

The image contained a news story about new newspapers that had started publishing in different regions. In the capital, El Amigo del Pueblo was launched, described as Gothic and retrograde, but supported by its dissemination of doctrines of order and freedom and its occupation with useful issues for the Republic. It was hoped that this newspaper would maintain a long and prosperous career, with calm and measured debate. In Popayán, the publication of El Republicano, an opposition newspaper that promised impartial and dispassionate surveillance of the government, began.
