Resumen
The monograph by Diana Patricia Vargas Montoya explores the power of dance as a tool for social transformation in the locality of Tunjuelito, Bogotá. The artistic project was born from urban dance workshops conducted by the DINAMOV group in collaboration with the local Casa de la Cultura. Using a qualitative ethnographic research methodology, the team carried out fieldwork to identify key social issues, which were later translated into a non-traditional stage performance. The project drew on theoretical and artistic references from urban and contemporary dance, incorporating improvisation techniques to create a choreographic piece that reflected daily walking as a metaphor for the different life paths of individuals.
The creative process emphasized the role of dancers as interpreter-creators, who used their own technical background and personal experiences to develop characters rooted in real social contexts (such as a street vendor, a university student, or a football hooligan). Contemporary and urban dance elements (locking, popping, house, etc.) were incorporated, with a focus on everyday actions as expressive tools. The piece was performed in unconventional public spaces—parks, streets, and schools—with the aim of directly engaging the community and encouraging reflection on issues such as social indifference, consumerism, and limited life opportunities. This monograph represents both a socially engaged artistic statement and a methodological guide for future projects that seek to connect dance and community.
