Abstract

Since the seventies with the creation of Geographic Information Systems, the timely response to different problems has been facilitated, where the role of geographic information for decision-making that affects environmental, socio-cultural and economic components is notable. In Colombia, the development of Geographic Information Systems has had a boom in the last two decades, especially in the public sector, since they are a tool for analysis and decision making, which can focus the efforts of the state towards development. and welfare of populations in need of them. The topographical engineer, thanks to his knowledge in geomatics, cartography and others, can participate in the design and implementation of GIS applications, making use of available software and technological advances.
