Resumen
In this section of Voces y Regiones, the discussion focuses on the importance of Indigenous languages in Colombia, highlighting the linguistic richness of the country’s many native peoples. Despite the challenges they face, many mother tongues remain alive within different communities, carrying ancestral knowledge, worldviews, and unique ways of understanding life.
Colombia is one of the most linguistically diverse countries in Latin America, with more than 65 recognized Indigenous languages, each reflecting the identity and history of its people. However, many of these languages are at risk of extinction due to globalization, lack of recognition, and forced displacement.
The preservation and strengthening of these languages are essential to maintaining the country’s cultural diversity. Through community-led initiatives, bilingual education programs, and institutional recognition, efforts are being made to ensure the survival of these languages, encouraging their use in various spaces and fostering pride in Indigenous identity.
